🕹 PRE-GAME

What Are We Talkin’ About?

Picking up from last week's Touching Base, we're dropping into the world of Communication and dissecting a motivational speech (kinda) that gives us a look into the importance of using space when presenting, the benefit of a pause and how to leverage a hook to engage the team (audience, customer) as soon as you start talking.

☕️ WARM-UP

A little context and story behind why this is worth talking about

Short and sweet is KEY.

What type of speeches are we talking about?

  • Company wide updates

  • Sales or board presentations

  • Keynotes

  • Pre-game speeches or…

  • Anytime you have an audience

If there’s anything we know about the best motivational talks in business or sport, it’s that they get right to the point

If they don’t, they DO make the point CLEAR without dragging us along.

🛠 PRACTICE

Example of Someone Using A Skill or Framework

Picking up from last week, in the 1989 film, Major League, Big Lou Brown (played by the late James Gammon) is the Cleveland Indians Manager of a disgruntled organization and team of misfits. Before the season kicks off, he keeps it short and sweet with a statement of SHARED PURPOSE as part of his motivational pre-game speech. Check out the full play-by-play HERE.

⏱ GAMETIME

An Exercise Or Thought For You to Apply Right Here & Now

So, how do YOU motivate your team and deliver like Coach Lou?

  • Walk in with a purpose and own the space

  • Use an emotional hook to make it relatable

  • Leverage a pause to grab attention

  • If there’s a shared purpose - state it.

  • Speak with a deeper voice. #joke

🏁 THE CLOSE

Highlights From Today & Sources For Continued Learning

  • Commit to embracing a hard pause the next time you want to grab attention.

  • Listen to Rene Rodriguez talk about Emotional Movement as a way to engage your audience and make a connection.

  • Read - Talk Like Ted - This book gives practical tips from TED Talk speakers (as if the name didn’t tell you that already). I like it because there are examples, takeaways and simple descriptions for you to apply like the four elements of  delivery: rate, volume, pitch and you guessed it, PAUSES.
